BEYOND THE SCRIPT: RE-SHAPING UNDERSTANDING

NUTS & BOLTS

In the "Screen Practice 2: Factuals and Formats" unit, a six-week project was approached to fuse the creation of a mockumentary with the practice of inclusive collaboration. The unit assessment began with students pitching their mockumentary ideas, from which a select few were greenlit by the tutor. Students then formed production teams to create a 4-6 minute mockumentary, with roles determined through a consensus with the tutor.

One project stood out due to the involvement of Joshua, a student with Muscular Dystrophy who uses a wheelchair. Joshua’s mockumentary concept, featuring a character in a wheelchair who is also a cunning thief, was selected for its originality and daring approach. This narrative ingeniously challenged conventional stereotypes, offering a fresh perspective by reshaping perceptions of peoples in wheelchairs.

Joshua's recent transfer from another university added a layer of complexity to the project. New to the cohort and without the established relationships his peers had formed in previous collaborations, Joshua faced the challenge of quickly building trust and effective communication with his new teammates. This dynamic required adaptability and openness from everyone involved, crucial for the success of their collaborative effort.

Joshua's roles as writer, director, and cinematographer were a testament to his determination and creative versatility. To accommodate his physical limitations and bring his vision to life, a professional cinematographer was brought in to operate the camera under Joshua's guidance. This not only ensured the realisation of his creative vision but also served as a valuable lesson in adapting work environments to diverse abilities.

This project, particularly through Joshua's active participation and the adaptability of his team, highlighted the transformative potential of inclusive education. It extended beyond technical filmmaking skills, fostering a learning environment that emphasised empathy, adaptability, and respect for diverse capabilities, profoundly impacting all participants.

OUTCOMES & REFLECTIONS

Key Outcomes:

The experience highlighted the critical importance of scheduling that accommodates individual needs.

Next time we were able to facilitate early consultations with all students to understand their specific needs and constraints.

Staff and Students are now more aware of the importance of inclusive scheduling, which has fostered a culture of understanding for individual differences.

A significant outcome was collaborating closely with the Accessibility Advisor to refine Joshua's Learning Access Plan. This ensured that his specific needs were clearly communicated and understood by the unit coordinators in future production units.

The enhancement of accessibility support has not only benefited Joshua but has also raised awareness among all staff and students. This has encouraged a shift towards considering and implementing accessible practices in all production units.
